Who We Are
The Hillsather Press is a quarterly delivered literary magazine dedicated to horror, gothic, and dark literary voices. We publish fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, opening criticism and praise that explores the unconventional. We aim to provide an outlet for indie voices considered too niche and unconventional for traditional or market publication.
Founded from a love for horror and dark academia, The Hillsather Press seeks to break away from traditional acceptance and preserve/expand the canon of dark storytelling. We welcome any and all works that carry the weight of history and works that dare to reinterpret it.
Each issue is a carefully curated archive, something part literature, part cabinet of curiosities.
Our Mission
The Hillsather Press is an indie literary press for indie authors and writers. We aspire to give voices and platforms to new, upcoming, and unknown creators looking to garner a foothold in the publishing world.
Hillsather was started by an indie author, Elowen Greywell, who understands the difficulties surrounding publication and recognition, especially in niche literary spaces not currently considered as marketable as others (i.e.., literary horror). She hopes that The Hillsather Press will not only shed light on these more overlooked categories, but also help others discover the upcoming voices of them.
What is “Hillsather”?
Hillsather started as a fictional publishing house in Elowen Greywell’s debut novel, The Musings of He. The publication slowly expanded for her as a fun way to keep herself on track with her novels and provide an extra literary level to her works.
Over time, however, Hillsather grew from a simply fictional house to a substantially important aspect of her writing and something she aspired to truly bring to life, which leads us here. Hillsather has rather deep lore, that we hope to uncover and explore more through publication.
